Technical Committees/F39 on Normal and Utility Category Airplane Electrical Wiring Systems/

FAA Taps ASTM International to Develop Standards for Major Area of Aviation   Electronics

ASTM International has been selected as the home for a dynamic new standards initiative in the area of aviation electronics. Technical experts and aviation industry stakeholders have come together under the ASTM umbrella to form a dynamic new technical standards committee:

F39 on Normal and Utility Category Airplane Electrical Wiring Systems

ASTM Committee F39 was formed following a process in which the Small Airplane Directorate of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) determined that the voluntary consensus standards process was the preferred method for developing standards for small airplane electrical wiring systems. The Directorate selected ASTM International as the home for this standards development initiative noting ASTM’s long history as an industry partner through its consensus standards development process.

Help Address a Critical Aviation Industry Need

After reviewing the effects of aging on small transport category (corporate jet type) aircraft, the FAA’s Small Airplane Directorate, working as part of a larger working group, found that maintenance, installation and inspection procedures of the electrical wiring systems of these aircraft could be improved.

ASTM Committee F39 will help to address the needs of these findings through the development of standards related to small aircraft electrical wiring system design, fabrication, installation, modification, repair, documentation, inspection and maintenance processes, better ensuring safe designs.

As a member of Committee F39, you’ll partner with other technical experts from the aviation industry and representatives of the Aircraft Electronics Association and the FAA to craft clear and concise instructions pertaining to the entire life cycle of the aircraft wiring system.
