Revision of C140/C140M-22c Standard Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units


Recently some pavers have been introduced to the market that are manufactured with edge features that are much larger than the typical chamfer manufactured into the edges of units. While ASTM C140 contains provisions regarding removing excessive surface texture from paver compression specimens, chamfers intentionally manufactured on the edge of the specimens are specifically excluded from those requirements. The issue is that some of the ‘edge features’ being seen today could be considered chamfers by some lab personnel. Testing pavers with this excessive edge features within the compressive strength specimen can greatly reduce the measured compressive strength.
Data collected by two different labs on 20 different types of pavers has found that, on average, the typical chamfers have a widths of 6-7 mm, with the maximum width of 8.5 mm within the group measured. By comparison, the larger ‘edge feature’ on the new paver was 19.5 mm in width. This ballot item proposes to limit an acceptable edge chamfer to those that are no wider than 10 mm.
