F1236 Visual Inspection of Electrical Protective Rubber Products, paragraph 5.2.4, covers the inflation of gloves and sleeves for visual inspection. F496 In-Service Care of Insulating Gloves and Sleeves references F1236 in paragraphs 6.7 and 8.3 regarding inflation limits during visual inspection. Note 10 in F496 paragraph 8.3 gives specific inflation limits, but does not state how to determine the limits.
There has been discussion, questions, and confusion on how to properly determine and/or measure the inflation limits of gloves and sleeves per F496 paragraph 8.3 Note 10, regarding how not to exceed 2 times the normal size for Type 1 and 1.25 times the normal size for Type 2. Note 10 states:
NOTE 10—Inflation Limits:
Type I—No part of the glove or sleeve shall be stretched more than twice the normal size.
Type II—No part of the glove or sleeve shall be stretched more than 1.25 times the normal size.
Much discussion at several Subcommittee F18.60 meetings, Test Labs and the NAIL organization, has been how to consistently determine what 2 times and 1.25 times the normal size is. This proposed revision of F1236 paragraph 5.2.4 will eliminate this question and the resulting confusion.
