New Specification for Protective Helmets Worn by Pedestrian Roadway Workers

1. Scope

This standard specifies performance requirements and test methods for protective headgear worn by individuals who work on roadways, including personnel involved in:
• Public safety (i.e., fire service, emergency medical services, law enforcement)
• Road and highway construction and maintenance
• Towing and recovery
• Departments of transportation for each state
• Safety service patrol
This standard addresses performance in terms of impact protection (including linear and angular), eye protection, field of view, positional stability, retention system strength, and visibility.
This standard specifies pre-conditioning procedures to address environmental conditions in which these helmets are worn and stored.
