This test method covers the determination of fluoride in engine coolants by high-performance ion chromatography (HPIC). Several glycol degradation products (different carboxylates including, but not limited to, formate and glycolate) can be determined by this test method.

Fluoride-based fluxes used during the brazing of radiators may introduce fluoride ions to cooling systems which can decrease the corrosive protection of coolants. Therefore, it is imperative to have a test method for the determination of fluoride in engine coolants. Several glycol degradation products (different carboxylates including, but not limited to, formate and glycolate) can be analyzed using the same test method. The test method will be used by users and manufacturers of engine coolants.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
