New Test Method for Determining the Directional-Hemispherical Solar Reflectance of Materials Using a Portable Reflectometer

1. Scope

1. Scope
1.1. This test method covers a technique for determining directional-hemispherical reflectance of solar radiation by materials in a laboratory or in the field using a portable reflectometer and simulated solar radiation. The purpose of the test method is to evaluate the reflectance properties of surfaces exposed to solar radiation.
1.2. This test method is applicable to specimens of materials having both specular and diffuse optical properties.
1.3. This technique is supported by comparing reflectometer measurements with those using ASTM E903-12 test method for solar reflectance data obtained using integrating spheres.
1.4. This test method refers to applications using standard solar spectral irradiance functions but may be applied using alternative weighting functions.

Keywords

solar reflectance; directional-hemispherical reflectance; portable reflectometer

Rationale

The proposed test method goes beyond the scope of C1549. C1549 measures
reflectance of solar radiation for wavelengths in the range 250-2500 nm. The
new test method provides directional-hemispherical reflectance data for solar radiation.
The test method is needed to evaluate surface exposed to solar radiation where angle dependent data are needed. The standard will provide useful data for evaluation of roofing materials and exterior coatings for walls and roofs.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
