New Test Method for Measurement of Thickness of Chromium and Chromium Alloy deposits by coulometric/ White Light Interferometry

1. Scope

This test method covers the determination of thickness of metallic coatings by the coulometric method, also known as the anodic solution or electrochemical stripping method, combined with white light interferometry. Method is particularly applicable to decorative chromium deposits but can be used for other thin chromium deposits. Range of testing is typically 0.1-0.5 microns but can include thicker deposits.

Keywords

decorative chromium; chromium thickness; measurement of chromium; chromium; thickness determination

Rationale

Current ASTM methods are not accurate for the determination of thin chromium and chromium alloy deposits on various substrates. Automotive OEMs do not have a accurate or practical test method for thickness determination.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
