This test method was approved as a standard in 2018, and after subsequent testing in laboratories it was discovered that the impact noise ratings varied with different tapping machines because the self-noise of the tapping machine was not the same when tapping on the test specimen as it was when tapping on the foam pad. This proposed revision incorporates three major changes to the previous (original) standard. First, it requires placement of an acoustical enclosure over the tapping machine to reduce radiated noise from the tapping machine. This effectively reduces the sound source to the exposed floor area outside of the acoustical enclosure. The second change requires the test to be repeated using the exact same procedure on a bare 6” thick concrete slab. The final change is the resulting rating is the radiated noise reduction provided by the floor topping test specimen.>
