ASTM A951/A951M has included stainless steel as an option for joint reinforcement but stainless steel would not be able to meet the tension test requirements in Table 1. The TMS 402/602 committee extensively studied the use of stainless steel joint reinforcement and concluded that Type 316 is also acceptable. The committee also determined appropriate tension test requirements for stainless steel. The proposed limits of 45 ksi for yield strength and 90 ksi for tensile strength are a part of the 2022 TMS 602 Specification for Masonry Structures. However, it would be more appropriate to include these requirements directly in ASTM A951/A951M rather than TMS 602 providing additional requirements to A951/A951M. Once these requirements are added to ASTM A951/A951M, they will be proposed to be removed from TMS 602.
