Revision of D2697-03(2021) Standard Test Method for Volume Nonvolatile Matter in Clear or Pigmented Coatings

Due to negative votes on the prior ballot, the following additional changes have been made: (Edit 1) 1.1: added “This method does not apply to radiation curable materials or pigmented coatings.”;  (Edit 2) 2.1: added “D5403 Standard Test Methods for Volatile Content of Radiation Curable Materials”;  (Edit 3) 7.2: changed “110 ± 5°” to “110 ± 5°C”;  (Edit 4) 7.5 changed “for 1 h at 110°C” to “and heat for 1 h at 110 ± 5°C”; (Edit 5) 8.3: defined w as “nonvolatile mass fraction in wet coating (no units)”;  (Edit 6) Footnote 6: changed city/year to “Boca Raton, FL, 2021”;  (Edit 7) Footnote 7: removed note, as Teledyne no longer manufacters specialty metals. The aluminum tubes are readily sourced from local machine shops or industrial suppliers.

Changes from prior ballot round: Minor edits to 7.2 and 8.3. (1) language in 7.2 that references D2369 clarified to read 'heating in an oven at 110 ± 5° for 60 minutes'; (2) corrected units for w in equation 8.3 from 'g' to 'no units' as this value is a percentage represented as a mass fraction and is a dimensionless quantity.
