New Guide for Hemp Fiber Screenings and Hemp Fiber Dust Intended for Select Manufacturing Use

1. Scope

This guide is for use by hemp hurd decorticators to assist meeting aspects related to consistency for key properties in hemp fiber screenings and hemp fiber dust. Further attributes may be added when they can be assessed for feasibility and /or applicable test methods. Both fiber screenings and fiber dust may be further processed depending on the end use, however the thresholds in this guide do not apply to further processed product. Additional uses may be facilitated as product properties are further defined.

Keywords

hemp hurd, fiber, fiber screenings, fiber dust, non-woven, industrial hemp

Rationale

Use of identifiable attributes or threshold properties provides a tool to assist buyers and sellers to target product to appropriate use(s). Hemp fiber screenings and dust from decortication that meet thresholds identified in Table 1 may become the feedstock for non-woven absorbents, pet litter and a pelletized energy source. Those companies using hemp fiber screenings and dust in the 3 identified uses will be the main users, as will decorticators looking to re-purpose products in their plant from trash to useable product inputs.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
