New Guide for Hemp Hurd and Bast Fiber Intended for Selected Manufacturing Use
1. Scope
1.1 This guide is to be used by hemp hurd decorticators and hemp bast fiber primary processors to assist meeting secondary manufacturing thresholds for key properties. 1.2 This guide identifies recommended ranges of properties that contribute to consistency of quality for hemp bast used in non-woven or airlay production, hemp bast fiber used in pulping for paper, and for hemp hurd fiber. 1.3 Use of identifiable attributes described as property characteristics for hemp hurd and bast fiber provides an additional tool for buyers and sellers to target product to appropriate use(s). 1.4 This guide identifies common threshold ranges that may be adjusted as the hemp fiber product manufacturing sectors expand and new technology is introduced 1.5 Units-The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.7 This International standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of international Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Rationale
Hemp fiber products are meeting increased demand by manufacturers and consumers. Because hemp decortication is somewhat new in many regions, thresholds for basic properties are identified in this guide to assist targeting of appropriate use(s) or markets. While there is no one comprehensive set of quality-related properties to assist all hemp fiber sectors, basic thresholds for hemp hurd, bast fiber intended for airlay insulation, and hemp pulp destined for pulp and paper are described. As further test methods are identified by another ASTM D37.07 working group, they can be applied to the thresholds in this guide.
