ASTM WK78621

New Guide for Determination of Disinfectant Surface Area Coverage.

1. Scope

The proposed scope of this guide is to quantitatively assess the percent surface area coverage of wet disinfectants at a given dwell time. The working group will determine how to write the standard to include as many chemistries, materials and application methods (e.g., wipe, spray, electrostatic spray) as possible.

Keywords

Disinfectant:Dwell Time:Contact Time:Surface Coverage:Surface Area Coverage:Sanitize:Antimicrobial

Rationale

This standard is needed because lab methods used to qualify disinfectants and make claims do not reflect real world use conditions. This represents a critical gap in the field that will be addressed in this work. This protocol will provide instructions to assess disinfectant spreading and de-wetting at given contact times that people can use in the setting where the disinfectant will be used and using the desired application method by adding a dye to the disinfectant solution and providing quantitative analysis instructions.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
