Ice Ball; Impact:
The resistance of asphalt shingles to impact from hailstones is an ever growing focus for manufacturers, homeowners, building owners, and insurers. These products currently utilized dated and unrelated standards to measure their resistance to impact from hailstones. UL2218 - Standard for Safety Impact Resistance of Prepared Roof Covering Materials has served these products for decades, but is limited by the rigidity of the steel balls utilized to impact the specimens which may not have the same influence on the specimen as hailstones of varying densities do. FM4473 - Test Standard for Impact Resistance Testing of Rigid Roofing Materials by Impacting with Freezer Ice Balls is also utilized by the asphalt shingle industry, but must be modified or interpreted in order to be used to evaluate asphalt shingles - a non-rigid, discontinuous roof covering material.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
