Tensile and impact testing of flanges has not always given consistent impact resistance. For welding neck flanges the critical area is generally the welding ends. Other types of flanges are also covered. To achieve any kind of consistency in getting similar results when tested by others, the location and orientation of testing should be standardized. This new supplementary requirement is intended to provide that consistency. The mandatory heat treatment and fine grain practice of the base specification naturally apply.
