New Guide for Obtaining a Representative Sample of Granulated Copper Chops for the Determination of Physical Characteristics and Chemical Composition

1. Scope

Following the receipt of granulated copper chops, this practice describes the process of acquiring a representative sample of granulated fine copper chops for the determination of physical characteristics and chemical composition. This method is ideal for determining the chemical composition using Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (AES), but other methods of tests are viable, depending on laboratory sample preparation.

Keywords

fine chops, granulated, representative, riffler, pipe core-sampler, gaylord

Rationale

A standard guide is needed to help reach consensus between scrap processors and users of copper scrap to coming up with a common method to consistently evaluate a representative sample for the properties of granulated, fine-copper chops - physically and chemically.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
