New Specification for Standard Specification for Basalt Fiber Strands

1. Scope

This specification covers the requirements for continuous fiber made from basalt, an igneous rock formed by rapidly cooled lava. Basalt fiber is produced by melting basalt and drawing the melt though a bushing. Typically, a sizing is applied to the fiber as it is cooled. Basalt fiber strands have a variety of general uses under specific conditions, such as high physical or chemical stress, high moisture, or high temperature environments. Property requirements under specific conditions are agreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier.

Basalt fiber; basalt

Basalt fiber specification is needed as a starting point to expand on future basalt fiber test methods.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
