Revision of E518/E518M-15 Standard Test Methods for Flexural Bond Strength of Masonry

Rationale

A review of this test method shows that it allows both third-point loading (Test Method A) and uniform loading with an air bag (Test Method B). Uniformly distributed loading produces a moment distribution that is significantly different than third-point loading. Researchers have shown that the mean strength determined from uniform loading was 1.97 to 1.99 times the mean strength determined using two concentrated loads, each at the quarter-point3,4 in larger format tests. This suggests that the two methods are not equivalent, and that third-point loading is more conservative and realistic than uniform loading. This ballot item proposes to reduce the testing protocol to a single testing regime, third-point loading, for this small assembly test and to remove the uniform loading option.
