New Test Method for Determining the Fuel Filter Blocking Potential of B100 Biodiesel Blend Stock by Portable Separometer

1. Scope

1.1 This test method covers a rapid, portable means for field and laboratory use to rate the filter blocking potential of a B100 biodiesel blend stock with a cloud point below 20o C (68o F) . 1.2 This test method is applicable to B100 biodiesel and similar fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) that meet all of the other requirements of D6751 and intended for use as a blend stock under Specifications D975 and D7467 and similar middle distillate fuels. 1.3 Results are expressed as BSEP readings from a Micro-Separometer instrument.

Keywords

Coalescence; hydrocarbon diesel.

Rationale

: This is a new test method to provide a rapid, portable means to rate the filter blocking potential of a B100 biodiesel blend stock. This test method may be a suitable alternative for test method D7501 Determination of Fuel Filter Blocking Potential of Biodiesel (B100) Blendstock by Cold Soak Filtration Test. Please see the Correlation Graph at Appendix X3 . and Comparison Table at Appendix X4. This new test takes approximately 10 minutes and exhibits good precision based on the Ruggedness Study data included in Appendix X2. This test method will be helpful to biodiesel producers, blenders, and fuel testing laboratories.
