New Test Method for Non-Destructive Estimation of Compressive Strength of Concrete Masonry Units, Cylinders and Related Units Using Acoustics.

1. Scope

This test method covers non-destructive estimation of the compressive strength of concrete masonry units (CMUs) and related similar-sized units based on acoustic resonances. With appropriate calibration, the test method provides an estimate of compressive strength that is comparable to Strength measurements obtained through standard Crush testing as described in ASTM C140. Similarly, it also provides an estimate of compressive strength of units created for the purpose of strength testing, such as is described for Cylinders in ASTM C39.

Rationale

This test method can facilitate more and better testing. It can be useful for corroborating Crush test results and identifying sources of variation in the measurements. It can provide precise measurement of strength development with age through repeated testing of individual units. It can be quickly performed virtually anywhere, which makes it possible to engage in a variety of useful opportunistic testing scenarios. Finally, it is suitable for use in regions where trusted Crush testing facilities are not accessible. Users include a broad range of people involved in concrete masonry and concrete strength testing.
