Revision of F2291-20 Standard Practice for Design of Amusement Rides and Devices

F2959 contains language relating to the restraint of patrons. F2291 is the primary design guide for amusement rides. F2291 contains language concerning containment but does not address the containment systems used in aerial adventure courses and other unique amusement attractions. The F2959 task group would like to expand constraint to F2291. The new section would be labeled 6.4.5 The F2959 task group is replacing the existing language restraint with containment. Restraint does not adequately describe the intent of the section as the term containment will. In F747-15, containment system is defined as: a device installed on the concession go-kart track, which defines the boundaries of the track, and whose primary purpose is to contain the vehicles within the defined boundary. The task group does not wish to define containment, as permitted by the ASTM International Form & Style Guide Section E, within F2291 because we are defaulting to the definition within Websters dictionary which is the act, process, or means of keeping something within limits. Therefore, the standard user should understand that in this standard we are using it to mean: system whose primary purpose is to limit patron(s) within defined boundaries of the patron clearance envelope(s). The proposed language is existing within F2291 and F2959 with minor modifications.
