New Specification for Solid Round Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Dowel Bars for Load Transfer Between Concrete Slabs

1. Scope

This specification covers glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) dowel bars, provided in cut lengths and having a smooth surface so that the expansion and contraction of concrete along the main axis of the dowel is not inhibited. A dowel bar, commonly referred to as a dowel, acts as a vertical load transfer device between concrete slabs. Dowels covered by this specification shall meet the requirements for geometric, material, mechanical, and physical properties described herein.

Keywords

composite materials; fiber reinforced plastics; reinforced concrete; concrete pavements; dowel bars

Rationale

This standard will expand and clarify the market for smooth FRP composite bars that are using in load bearing applications as shear/dowel reinforcement in concrete pavements. Currently such bars are being procured using ad-hoc manufacturer's specifications that are not consistent in the industry.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
