New Test Method for Analyses of Trace Elements in Cannabis and Related Products by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)

1. Scope

1.1 This test method covers the determination of total metals in cannabis and hemp flowers. 1.2 This test method should be used by analysts experienced in the use of microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the interpretation of spectral and matrix interferences and procedures for their correction. 1.3 It is the users responsibility to ensure the validity of the test method for untested matrices. 1.4 UnitsThe values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of international Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

cannabis; CBD; contaminant; cultivar; dispensing operation; extract; harvesting; heavy metals; hemp; inhalation; medical marijuana; resin; THC; toxic metals

Medical or recreational cannabis and cannabis products may contain trace metals. For safety, these trace metals should be below concentrations determined by state or regulatory agencies to be toxic. A standardized method is needed to ensure results generated by laboratories for compliance purposes are within known accuracy and precision.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
