New Test Method for Determination Humus Generation during Biodegradation

1. Scope

Biodegradation of natural materials including plant and animal matter can generate humus. This test method determines the amount of humus generated during a biodegradation test through quantification of humid acid and fulvic acid generated during a test.

Keywords

biodegradation, humus, humid acid, fulvic acid, compost

Rationale

ASTM D6868 allows for the subtraction of carbon lost to humus generation for determining the amount of biodegradation that a material or product undergoes. However, no such method exists within ASTM for determining the amount of humus generated. The proposed method will actually be useful for all biodegradation testing for soil, water, landfill, compost and anaerobic digestion.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
