This ballot item would add as a reference, D7261 Standard Test Method for Determining Water Separation Characteristics of Diesel Fuels by Portable Separometer to Appendix X4.1 (Nonmandatory Information) of D7467. The revision would inform readers of a test to rate the ability of bio diesel fuel blends to release entrained water when passing through coalescing media. This characteristic provides an indication of the presence and strength of surfactants in the fuel. Surfactants reduce interfacial tension of liquids and inhibit the coalescing process. Support on the hazards of surfactants in fuel can be found in ASTM D1655 Standard Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuels. Supporting data on D7261 can be found in Research Reports 1876 and 1877 and may be obtained from Lisa Drennen at ldrennen@astm.org.
