New Test Method for Benchmark Profiler Measuring the Longitudinal Profile of Traveled Surfaces

1. Scope

1.1 This standard is for defining a Benchmark Profiler which shall be used to provide a bias data file to be used in ASTM E950-xx. This standard is device independent. Measurements may be made by any device capable of producing a suitable longitudinal elevation profile in an automated manner as defined herein. The Benchmark Profiler developed under the FHWA Project Improving the Quality of Pavement Profile Measurement (9,10) is an example of a device developed to meet this standard. The report Critical Profiler Accuracy Requirements, (8), contains a good discussion leading to the requirements. 1.2 The elevation measurements collected by a Benchmark profiler shall be used to validate/certify a Reference Class Profiler as defined in ASTM E950. In order to conduct profile measurements for a particular application, the calculated profile shall meet the accuracy and repeatability requirements specified herein for that particular application or class. Selection of proper filtering allows the user to obtain suitable wavelength information for the intended application. For example, for road roughness evaluation, the precision and bias is determined using the cross correlation method after filtering using the International Roughness Index (IRI) filter (1). For airfield applications, the precision and bias is determined using the cross correlation method after filtering using a 6th order Butterworth long waveband filter with cutoffs at 90 m (300 ft.) and 8 m (26 ft.). 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
