New Practice for the On-Site Inspection of Fire Resistive Duct Systems

1. Scope

This Practice provides a standard set of guidelines for conducting and reporting on inspections of fire resistive duct systems. This practice establishes procedures to inspect products and systems, including methods for field verification and inspection. This Practice addresses all types of fire resistive duct systems as well as differences between the various duct types. This Practice provides an inspector, employed by an inspection agency, various methods to verify that fire resistive duct systems have been installed to the tested and listed system and manufacturers installation instructions in addition to project requirements.

Keywords

Duct Insulation; Fire Protection

Rationale

Currently, there is no document that has been produced in the industry that is a consensus of the industry manufacturers and contractors. The ASTM Standard proposed creates a key document that has been developed by manufacturers, contractors AND those inspection agencies that provide inspections. ASTMs new document will provide in mandatory code acceptable language the method to inspect fire resistive duct systems. Architects will specify this standard as the inspections are mandated by Chapter 17 of the International Building Code.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
