1.1 This guide covers steps used to quantify moisture content of hempseed intended for human consumption. 1.2 This guide applies to plant breeders, hempseed producers/farmers, seed cleaners, storage facilities, second-party laboratories, and processors. A more complex set of steps will apply in accredited laboratories including procedures for ISO 17025 and additional calculations such as margin of error. 1.3 This guide may not apply in cases in which a more rapid moisture estimate is deemed sufficient, for example, during active harvesting of broadacre crops. 1.4 UnitsThe values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
calibration; hempseed; hemp seed; industrial hemp; moisture test, spoilage, storage
Moisture management in hemp seed after harvest, including on-farm storage and through to processor facilities, is critical to the quality hemp seed and to avoid potential spoilage. Hemp seed that is too moist makes a lot/batch or possibly an entire crop susceptible to microbial attack, spoilage, and rancidity, which can result in significant financial and food safety implications. This guide if used throughout the hemp industry will provide an accurate, standardized guide to measure moisture and will help ensure hemp seed is safe for human consumption and appropriate for processing.
