Scope 1.1 This standard describes Automated Surrogate tests for Asphalt Performance (ASAP), which provides equivalent results to standard (referee) tests using more efficient methods. 1.2 ASAP makes optimum use of resources to determine asphalt materials performance properties in a safer, quicker, and more cost-effective manner than the current standard referee tests. 1.3 ASAP provides a tool for Quality Control (QC)/Quality Acceptance (QA), field applications, and quick screening of materials when the standard test methods include extensive requirements, use complex/expensive equipment, require time-consuming sample preparation and testing procedures, or use hazardous materials. 1.4 . ASAP can be used in place of a referee test for purchase specification when it has equal or better precision estimates than the referee test. 1.5 This standard is appropriate for any fine particulate asphalt materials. 1.6 This test method uses the statistical procedure described in ASTM E2935 to verify the equivalence between results of surrogate and referee tests. 1.7 ASAP requires a rheometer as described in D7175, except with a wider range of temperatures (refer to 7.2). 1.8 For improved efficiency over a referee test, ASAP requires a testing software capable of automatically conducting a surrogate test without any manual work and providing results that are equivalent to those of the referee test in less than an hour. 1.9 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurements are included in this standard. 1.10 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

ASAP standard is needed for safer, faster, and more practical determination of asphalt binder performance properties. ASAP can be used for quality control, quality acceptance , and design. The users of ASAP are government and private agencies in the field of asphalt.
