New Guide for Repair and Recovery of Damaged Audio Media

1. Scope

1.1This guide describes procedures for handling, repairing, and initial recovery of audio data from damaged or contaminated physical media. 1.2The procedures in this guide are intended to be performed before any analytical, enhancement, or authentication examinations are conducted to maximize integrity of the data being analyzed. 1.3This guide offers a set of instructions for performing one or more specific operations. This standard cannot replace knowledge, skill, or ability acquired through appropriate education, training, and experience and should be used in conjunction with sound professional judgment. Not all aspects of this practice may be applicable in all circumstances. 1.3.1.A forensic audio examiner must demonstrate competency in the procedures detailed in this guide before applying them to casework. Refer to the SWGDE Core Competencies for Forensic Audio for recommendations on forensic audio training. 1.4This guide does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
