New Test Method for Water Retention of Hydraulic Cement-Based Mortars and Plasters by Way of Water Loss

1. Scope

1.1This test method provides for the determination of water retention of hydraulic cement-based mortars and plasters. Water Retention is directly measured through the absorption of water from the mortar by the substrate. Various substrates may be chosen by the user based on the intended use of the tested mortar. This standard defines such substrates. Comparisons can be made between different mortars on the same substrate or the same mortar on different substrates. 1.2 This test method provides a water retention value via direct water loss, while in C1506 provides a water retention value via mortar flow.

Keywords

Rationale

The subcommittee C01.22 in Workability has identified the need to design a new test method to measure the water retention capability of mortar or plaster materials applied to job specific substrates or control substrates (standard samples). ASTM test method C 1506 for Water Retention of Hydraulic Cement-Based Mortars and Plasters is currently in place but relies on flow retention to indicate the water retention capability of the mortar or plaster by using a vacuum. This in-place method does not allow the use of any substrate, nor does it account for the absorption of varying substrates. This new method is being designed to measure the water retention of the mortar with the option to use varying substrates or job specific materials or compare different mortars using the same substrate. This test has been run in a single laboratory and the test was repeatable within +/-3% water retention on a standard filter paper substrate.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
