New Test Method for Polonium-210 in Water

1. Scope

1.1 This test method covers the measurement of polonium-210 activity concentration in a homogeneous water sample. It is applicable to polonium-210 activity concentration levels above 0.03 Bq/L (0.8 pCi/L). 1.2 This test method is applicable to the determination of soluble 210Po in water from natural or anthropogenic sources. 1.3 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are provided for information purposes only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Keywords

alpha spectrometry; deposition; electrodeposition; spontaneous deposition; polonium; polonium-210; 210Po; radioactivity; radiochemistry

Rationale

Polonium-210 can be found in locations with radium and uranium. EPA added Po-210 to the list of Contaminants Needing Research on Methods in 2001. ASTM does not yet have a test method for Po-210.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
