New Test Method for Viscosity of Hydrocolloids used for Erosion Control

1. Scope

One important property of hydrocolloids used for erosion control is the ability to viscosify water when placed in solution. Viscosity reflects the average molecular weight, purity and condition of the hydrocolloid. This test is a quantitative determination of the viscosity with standard viscometers and spindles at a standard concentration.

Rationale

Some hydrocolloids such as guar gum, xanthan gum, cellulose gum, and starch are commonly used as hydraulically applied erosion control polymers. Their purpose is to produce slurry viscosity optimizing equipment pump performance and sprayability and to provide adhesion to prevent soil particles and hydromulch martices from dislodging due to precipitation or wind. The most common means of determining relative usefulness is through the measurement of the viscosity produced by a standard concentration solution of the product. The method provides a quantitative measure of viscosity and thus a qualitative comparison of potential effectiveness.
