New Test Method for Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Hard Anodic Coatings by the Taber Abraser

1. Scope

This test method quantifies the abrasion resistance of electrolytically formed hard anodic oxidation coatings on a plane, rigid surface of aluminum or aluminum alloy.

Rationale

Abrasion resistance of anodized aluminum is an important property that is required for material performance and quality control. There are limitations to the current method (MIL-A-8625F) which has caused companies who follow the method to suggest a new procedure be developed that addresses the shortcomings. The original proposal of developing a new ASTM method was discussed in a B08 committee meeting in 2012 and also at a meeting of the International Hard Anodizing Association (IHAA).

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
