New Practice for Creating a Correlation to Compare Particle Size Distribution Results of Proppants Measured by Dynamic Imaging Analyzers and Sieves

1. Scope

1.1 This practice covers the determination of a correlation of results of particle size distribution measurements made by dynamic imaging analyzers and sieves. THe proppant size distribution specifications included are designated in API Recommended Practice 19C and are reprinted in this standard. The parameter used to determine individual particle size may vary for each instrument and shall be defined in the report. 1.3 Instruments may produce particle shape parameters as part of their normal operation, and this data may be used if it is helpful; however, particle shape is not required reporting. 1.4 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 All observed and calculated values shall conform to the guidelines for significant digits and rounding established in Practice D6026, unless superseded by this test method. 1.5.1 The procedures used to specify how data are collected/recorded and calculated in the standard are regarded as the industry standard. In addition, they are representative of the significant digits that generally should be retained. The procedures used do not consider material variation, purpose for obtaining the data, special purpose studies, or any considerations for the users objectives; and it is common practice to increase or reduce significant digits of reported data to be commensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scope of these test methods to consider significant digits used in analysis methods for engineering data. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Rationale

This standard is needed to harmonize procedures used to establish correlations between dynamic imaging analyzers and sieves. Proppant manufacturers follow API RP 19C to sample and test proppant particle size distributions using sieves. This standard will allow them to follow a uniform method to correlate distribution results of sieves to dynamic imaging analyzers. Once established work can proceed toward a test method that will include size and shape measurements.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
