New Guide for Specifying Water Vapor Transmission Material Properties of Water Resistive Barriers and Air Barriers

1. Scope

The promotion of knowledge, stimulation of research, development and maintenance of standards and related documents for performance of buildings, their elements, components, including means and methods of fabrication and assembly; and the description, measurement, prediction, improvement, and management of the overall performance of buildings and building-related facilities. The work of this Committee will be coordinated with other ASTM Committees and other organizations having a mutual interest.

Keywords

Building enclosure, Hygrothermal model, water-resistive barrier, water vapor permeability, water vapor permeance, water vapor transmission

Rationale

This guide should provide a rational foundation for proper specification of water-resistive barrier and air barrier properties with regards to water vapor transmission and allows adoption or implementation into building codes and specifications. This guide has been developed based on the current knowledge of building science, and should be used in conjunction with professional judgment and experience on case-by-case basis by code officials, designers, architects, engineers, and builders.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
