A Simplified Test Method for Determining the Low Rate Creep Crack Growth Data

Source

A simplified test method for determining the energy rate line integral C* has been developed. This test method involved the application of a constant load to a deeply cracked compact type specimen. C* is calculated from the load, steady-state load-line displacement rate, and crack length. The analytical background for this test method is described, and experimental creep crack growth rate data developed for Type 304 stainless steel at 593°C (1100°F) are used to verify the approach. This simplified test method yielded results consistent with data developed with the more complicated approach originally proposed by Landes and Begley.
