Diagnostics and Evidence of Pre-catastrophic Damage in Transparent Solids

Source

Light-scattering techniques have been used to observe precatastrophic laser-produced damage in α-quartz. The detailed Raman spectrum has been measured for a quartz sample before and after irradiation by an intense laser pulse. For sample regions where no macroscopic damage was visible the linewidth of the 128-cm−1 Raman line was increased by about 20 percent relative to that for unradiated regions. A static stress, comparable to that produced by the intense laser pulse, was applied to an undamaged sample and the Raman Une positions, linewidths, and intensities were observed to change with applied stress. These changes can be predicted based on a simple anharmonic potential model.
