Introduction

Source

The Symposium on Damage in Laser Glass had as its central task the statement of the present level of understanding with regard to damage thresholds for short pulse (Q-Switched) operation in glass lasers. Questions of fatigue, solarization, and other aging problems were not considered. In general, the discussion was restricted to laser glass, although other materials were discussed in connection with diagnostic techniques. An attempt has been made by the co-chairmen of the conference to summarize and review the salient points raised by each of the speakers. This is a partially subjective enterprise, and other readers may find a different emphasis upon reading the texts of the papers which were presented. We have also attempted to summarize the conclusions reached at the Symposium, point out those important features which were not discussed in the meeting, and shape several recommendations for further research and development in this field. These conclusions and recommendations are presented at the end of the Review and Summary section. Following the introductory sections, the full text of each of the papers presented at the Symposium is given, with the discussion of each paper following the text. It is unavoidable that any record of discussion is incomplete and subject to erroneous reporting. It is the hope of the editors of this volume that the participants in the Symposium will find their remarks fairly faithfully represented, with the essential sense left intact.
