Two New Indexes to the Powder Diffraction File

Source

Two new indexes for use with the Powder Diffraction File have recently been published by ASTM. The Fink Index is a numerical index in book form that is based on the eight most intense lines of the powder patterns. It is designed to facilitate the identification of patterns that do not yield reliable relative intensity values, such as those generally obtained by electron diffraction and those sometimes obtained by X ray diffraction from specimens showing a high degree of preferred orientation. The Matthews Coordinate Index is an optical coincidence coordinate index published on Termatrex index cards. It has been developed to take advantage of modern data retrieval methods and to allow chemical information to be incorporated directly into the search procedure. The development and construction of both indexes are discussed in detail and several examples are given illustrating the use of both indexes in identifying typical unknown patterns.
