Introduction

This book includes papers presented at the Technical Session on Electron Metallography held on Wednesday, June 26, 1963, during the Sixty-sixth Annual Meeting of the Society in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The session was sponsored by Subcommittee XI on Electron Microstructure of Metals of ASTM Committee E-4 on Metallography. The papers presented at this session include new techniques and applications of electron microscopy, diffraction, and microprobe analysis in research studies. The first paper by Hertzberg and Ford is an example of the application of electron microscopy to the study of fracture in a high-temperature alloy. The paper by Despres concerns a new technique for processing thin metal foils for viewing in transmission. Koh and Nikkel demonstrate the usefulness of probe analysis for identifying constituents in high-speed steel. Szirmae and Fisher present a critical analysis of spark cutting as a means of preliminary thinning for processing thin sections from bulk specimens. The paper by Tiner is another example of electron fractography applied, in this case, to a corrosion problem.
