Steps Taken to Overcome Cracking


In about three fourths of the case histories some comment was made on this question. As might be expected, in many-instances the investigator could not state whether the recommended change had been carried out or, if so, if it was effective. In the following summary of the replies it was felt best to list both the total number of suggestions for some particular change and the number of cases where such a change was recorded as being successful. The various steps recommended were broadly classified into the three catagories: (1) change in material, (2) change in corrosion environment, or (3) reduction of stress. Each category was then further broken down as seemed appropriate. The results of this classification are shown in Table I.
