Classification of Materials and Stress Conditions

This section deals with the data listed under “Materials and Fabrication” and “Origin of Stress” in Appendix. All case histories were used in tabulating the data except Nos. 27, 28, and 72. The first two were not included because they were clearly a type of cracking associated with attack by molten metals (brazing); although such cracking might be properly classified as stress-corrosion cracking, the cases are sufficiently different from the balance of the examples that it seems appropriate to consider them separately. Case history No. 72 deals with an instance where stress-corrosion cracking was anticipated but did not occur.
