Evaluation of Mineral Transformer Oil During Service. Part III: An Examination of Selected Transformers

Source

This paper deals with the data on selected transformers which have been removed from service and inspected for their general condition. The oil characteristics of each of these transformers have been described in Part II of this series, a paper prepared by one of the present authors and constituting a general survey of the oil problem. Among the general conclusions drawn from the analysis of Part II were the following: 1. Of the new oil (quality) tests, those for neutralization number and pressure oxidation appear best suited as a gage for the continued usability of an oil during transformer operation. 2. The change in the neutralization value of an oil and the change in the pressure sludge value are suggested as tests which show promise in the evaluation of the continued usability of an oil in transformer service. The object of this paper is to reexamine these conclusions on the basis of additional data obtained from the examination of the transformers which have been removed from the general testing program.
