Antiwear Requirements for Navy Turbine Oils


A part of the Navy's continuing program of improving its turbine-gear lubricating oils to meet new machinery requirements is the development of oils with improved performance under high gear tooth loads. Test of highly-loaded experimental gears first showed the potential service need for such oils. A development program has resulted in several oils which give improved performance in laboratory and full scale shop tests of gears. Recently some new fleet units have been found to require these improved oils. To provide them, a revision of the Navy turbine oil specification has been made, defining the antiwear properties and load-carrying ability of the new oils. It is expected that in the future even better oils will be needed.
