Effects of Cyclic Overloads on the Creep Rates and Rupture Life of Inconel at 1700 and 1800 F


A series of creep-rupture tests was conducted at 1700 and 1800 F on coarsegrained Inconel to determine the effect of cyclic mechanical and thermal overloads. The “over conditions” were applied for a single continuous time interval and also for several cyclic time intervals of equal duration. It was found that single applications of mechanical overloading (overstressing) had no significant effect on the total life of the material. However, if the same overload is applied in repeated intervals (cycles) instead of a continuous period, the material sustains very pronounced damage; total life and elongation are sharply reduced, and creep rates are greatly accelerated. The effect of multiple applications of thermal overloads is not as pronounced as with mechanical overloads; instead, the most significant factor appears to be the total length of time at the overtemperature.
