The Abrasion Resistance of Various Types of Porcelain Enamel

Source

The abrasion resistance of porcelain enamels is a property that has considerable significance to the users of protective finishes for metals. Since it is necessary to select the most suitable porcelain enamel for a specific application, it is desirable to know which type of enamel has the necessary abrasion resistance, whenever abrasion resistance is a property to be considered. In this study the types of enamels selected were those that have been employed on household appliances fabricated from sheet steel. Of the several recognized methods for measuring abrasion, the Taber abraser has probably received the greatest popularity because of its availability and ease of operation. This instrument was used to measure the abrasion resistance of the several types of porcelain enamels selected. The data obtained with this equipment under the conditions specified is relative within itself; it might be erroneous to compare it with that obtained, for example, on painted samples where the density of material and other factors are different.
