Gear Set Servicing by the Cathode Ray Oscilloscope

Source

The conditions that lead to gear tooth failures are very often difficult to determine. Therefore, any tool that aids in identifying the causes of failure is of interest to those who service gears. A cathode ray oscilloscope can be used for this purpose. As we all know, the instrument shows on its screen a series of curved harmonic Unes, thereby transposing vibration into visual form. By photographing the oscilloscope screen, permanent records of these curves are secured. The application of the oscilloscope in tracking down field difficulties is the outgrowth of the use of this instrument in gear lubricant test work in the Socony-Vacuum laboratories. Before describing the laboratory test work, a detailed case history will be given where the oscilloscope was used successfully in solving a field problem.
