The Viscurometer—A Study of Variables Associated with its Use

The Viscurometer is an apparatus that measures the cross-link induced change in shear stress of a rubber stock as a function of time at elevated cure temperatures. As such, it can be used to predict optimum cure, scorch time, mixed compound viscosity, and fully cured compound modulus. For this purpose a knowledge of the effect of such compounding variables as carbon black content, processing oil content, ultimate cross-link density, and temperature of test on the performance of the device is required. This paper describes an investigation of the influence of these variables. We will study this multivariable problem by the application of the systematic methods of statistical experimental design. The data of this program are analyzed by the methods appropriate to such designed experiments and the results are displayed in convenient, graphical form. A single material system is studied: SBR, HAF black, naphthenic oil, CBS accelerator, and sulfur.
