Extrusion of Beryllium Structural Shapes

Source

Despite the many attractive properties of beryllium, its use has been limited by a number of problems, such as its lack of three-dimensional ductility, the difficulty of fabricating complex shapes, and the high cost of the special processing techniques required. In recent years, however, considerable productive effort has been expended to enable the use of commercially available beryllium as a structural material. Because of the many design requirements for long lengths of uniform cross section, such as longerons, the extrusion process was naturally one of the fabrication methods which received considerable attention. For the purpose of this presentation, the term “extrusion” will be used to apply only to those extrusion techniques consistent with the requirements for generating long lengths. (Not included, for example, are low-reduction extrusions and back-extrusions of heavy-wall sections.)
